From a young age I would follow my stonemason father, Peter, to jobs whenever possible. Peter created a name for himself for his artisan stonework and was contracted by numerous modernist architects during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s including the renowned Robin Boyd. One of Peter’s most well-known stonemasonry work is the Boyd Baker House at Bacchus Marsh, you can view a good example of his work here.
By the time I left school my passion for working with stone was entrenched and I became my father’s apprentice. Together we worked on numerous jobs around Victoria including more of Robin Boyd’s designs, one of which was the Tower Hill Reserve pavilion at Warrnambool. Another job was Elliston Estate in Banyule.
Working with stone and slate became increasingly popular during the housing boom across Australia with an increasing number of people seeking feature walls, fireplaces and slate floors in their home as appreciation for the natural beauty, texture and versatility of stone grew.
In 1989 I turned my passion for stone and slate into a retail business and together with my wife Judy, we owned and operated the iconic Yeomans Tile & Slate Centre in Eltham. For 20 years we imported and distributed marble, stone, ceramic and terracotta tiles. This was another avenue for me to be exposed to new styles and products and during this time we took numerous trips to Italy, the tile world capital, to attend various industry related expos to see emerging trends and designs.
After nearly 20 years in retail we sold our business and I now enjoy being able to do what originally appealed to me, working hands-on with natural slate, stone and terracotta tiles.
